Music. Is. Everything.

built for the youth that the system left out

A new GenerOZity Project uses music to support LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent and at-risk youth by combining creative expression, identity-building and measurable wellbeing outcomes with an 8-week program

Music gives young people a way to express what they can’t yet say. The program creates a structured, safe environment where creativity becomes the pathway to connection, confidence, and wellbeing.

For many young people, existing systems actively exclude them. Music schools are expensive and competitive, drop-in centres lack consistency, and traditional youth programs often fail to create identity-safe environments.

Music. Is. Everything. strives to bridge the gap as a consistent, trauma-informed community where music is the entry point, belonging is the outcome, and wellbeing is the long-term goal.

GenerOZity is also pleased to announce the appointment of Nikki Kinloch to its Board of Advisors. A senior executive with more than 20 years’ experience leading large-scale transformation across the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, Nikki brings expertise in strategy, governance and delivering measurable outcomes.

Nikki first partnered with GenerOZity in 2019, when as CEO of Cure Cancer she launched Game On Cancer, a national gaming and streaming campaign that has raised over $2.5mn for cancer research. Her longstanding involvement gives her a strong understanding of the organisation’s mission and impact.

Nikki will help the GenerOzity team ensure Music. Is. Everything. is delivered with an outcomes-focused approach centred on the needs of young people.

“Navigating adolescence can be incredibly challenging, particularly for young people facing trauma, instability or exclusion. Music. Is. Everything. offers a practical, compassionate path to connection, helping young people feel empowered to realise their full potential,” said Nikki Kinloch.

Music activates the nervous system, supports rhythm-based regulation, and builds trust through collaboration, often faster than traditional verbal approaches. For young people who are not ready or able to talk, music becomes a language they already understand. Research shows:

  • Joint music-making promotes prosocial behaviour, even in a single session
  • Songwriting reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Performance builds self-efficacy that extends beyond creative contexts

Each cohort of up to 15 participants progresses through a structured program that is aligned to school terms:

A grid featuring eight squares, each labelled with topics related to music workshops, including rhythm, instruments, songwriting, band formation, recording, expression, group rehearsal, and a showcase.

Every session delivers three core outcomes: skill with real music ability, relationships with consistent mentors and peer connection, and identity with a sense of self beyond diagnosis or circumstance.

The program concludes with a live showcase, where participants perform and record an original collaborative piece.

Music. Is. Everything. has been designed with accessibility and safety as core principles, meaning sensory-assessed venues suitable for neurodivergent participants, creative check-ins instead of direct emotional questioning, consistent facilitators and mentors across all 8 weeks, and no forced disclosure or pressure to share personal experiences.

As part of this initiative, GenerOZity is taking a transparent, evidence-building approach to impact. The program tracks:

  • Pre and post wellbeing using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale
  • Facilitator observation logs
  • Attendance and completion rates
  • Referral partner feedback and satisfaction

Music. Is. Everything. is positioned as an early intervention model, designed to reduce escalation before crisis care is required. The need for early, preventative intervention has never been clearer, with 39% of Australians aged 16 – 24 experiencing a mental disorder last year. LGBTQIA+ young people also experience distress rates 4x – 6x higher than their peers.

The program costs approximately $900 per participant, compared to $10,000 – $30,000 for a single acute inpatient episode, and prevention programs return $2 – $6 for every $1 invested.

To support the growth of Music. Is. Everything., GenerOZity has launched Loves.Charity, its own purpose-built giving platform designed to directly fund GenerOZity’s projects. Created in-house to remove traditional fundraising barriers, Loves.Charity ensures that impact comes first – with just a 1% fee applied to recurring subscriptions, while 100% of all one-off donations go directly to the programs they support.

GenerOZity is seeking funding partners to expand the program to 60 young people across four cohorts in 2026 – 2027. This support will directly fund facilitators and mentors, sensory-appropriate venues, instruments and recording access, and independent wellbeing evaluations using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale.
